In an election year when the Senator from Illinois has had enormous support on college campuses, there?s clearly a concern regarding actual voter turnout of this demo, especially given the extremely close race that is anticipated. Laura Olsen posted yesterday that lawmakers heard testimony from students and activists on the legislation that Obama's Illinois colleagues, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced to ease the restrictions that make it difficult for students to vote. These include voter ID laws, absence of same-day registration and even intimidation. Schakowsky and others spoke today on the Hill on the Student Voter Act of 2008, which will require all universities that receive federal funds to offer voter registration to students at the same time as they register for classes.

It?s a gas, gas, gas: Obama a "Stones" man
By John McCormick

McCormick reported that in the midst of the Washington drama over the financial fiasco, Obama was asked in a quiet moment outside his office yesterday by a Congressional Quarterly reporter, whether he was a ?Stones? or a ?Beatles? guy. ?Stones,? he answered and then said he would make some comments after the White House meeting about the bailout agreement, which he did. After the meeting he met with the press pool and held a brief press conference, but didn't mention Mick and Keith once.

So what else is new? Jewish vote to go Democratic, but ?

Lawrence reports that USA Today religion writer Cathy Grossman alerts us to the annual survey by the American Jewish Committee which finds that as is traditional, American Jewish voters will likely vote Democratic in the November election (approximately 57%-30%). The hitch, however, is that there is an "unexpectedly large" (13%) group of Jewish voters who are still undecided.

"Blame it on the Jews" if Obama doesn't win
The Trail

Comedienne Sarah Silverman is the ?brains? behind TheGreatSchlep.com -- a Web site designed to encourage young Jewish voters to "schlep it" to Florida, a battleground state, to persuade their as-yet-undecided and suspicious Jewish relatives to vote for Obama. Silverman cracks that "if Obama doesn't become the next president of the United States, I'm going to blame the Jews." According to O'Keefe in the Trail, Silverman seeks to assuage Jewish fears about Obama by looking at the similarities between African Americans and Florida Jews. According to Silverman, both groups "can't get enough" of track suits, driving Cadillacs and "like things and bling and jewelry and stuff." She also points out that "barack" is a Hebrew word meaning ?lightning? and she'd much rather have a president who's name means lightning than a president who's first name means ?toilet.?
