'Trailblazer' Film Focuses on Cartoonist Etta Hulme

Posted
By: Dave Astor A new documentary called "Trailblazer" drew the rapt attention of attendees at the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists (AAEC) convention here. But audience member Etta Hulme didn't participate in the standing ovation -- because the film was about her.

When E&P asked Hulme what she thought of the movie, she was low-key. "I enjoyed it," the Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram/Newspaper Enterprise Association creator said modestly, as fellow cartoonists congratulated her in the lobby of Lexington's Kentucky Theatre.

"Trailblazer" traces Hulme's long career as one of the first women editorial cartoonists -- a progressive Texan whose work features a combination of pleasing drawing and pointed commentary. Many of her cartoons are shown in the film.

Hulme speaks in "Trailblazer," as do more than a dozen other syndicated cartoonists. Among them: one of the few other women in the profession -- Signe Wilkinson of the Philadelphia Daily News and Washington Post Writers Group; and the host of the AAEC convention -- Joel Pett of the Lexington Herald-Leader and Universal Press Syndicate.

Elaine Miller of EK Miller Productions in Brockport, N.Y. said she will try to make "Trailblazer" available "as widely as possible." Her other documentaries include "Drawing Conclusions: Editorial Cartoonists Consider Hillary Rodham Clinton" (1998) and "Running Mate: Gender and Politics in the Editorial Cartoons" (1993). The latter focuses on how cartoonists portrayed 1984 vice presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro.
