Newborn named for McCain Palin as campaign aid
The Swamp
Chicago Tribune
By James Oliphant

James Oliphant reports on a ?dad who puts ?country first? and wife second.? By this he means a new father in Tenn., Mark Ciptak of Elizabethtown, who secretly named his baby girl Sarah McCain Palin after the Republican ticket for president and vice president. The baby girl who had already been given a birth certificate and the name Ava Grace which the couple had agreed on earlier, said he named his third child after John McCain and Sarah Palin in order ?to get the word out? about the campaign. I took one for the cause,? he said. ?I can?t give a lot of financial support for the campaign?? Ciptak told his wife on the way home from the hospital and she evidently thought he was joking. I guess they will have to work this one out later-- after the election?

Game 6 of the World Series to begin late

Los Angeles Times
By Meg James

Major League Baseball agreed to begin Game 6 of the World Series about 15 minutes later so that Fox Broadcasting Co. could sell presidential candidate a half hour of prime time on Wednesday, October 29. According to Meg James, Obama has also bought the same time period on all three major networks for between $950,000 to $1 million. He hopes to reach more than 20 million people on the Wednesday before the election. A spokesman for the RNC said that ?it?s unfortunate that the World Series? first pitch is being delayed for Obama?s political pitch?. and before our national pastime.? Well, for a cool million Fox can afford to be ?fair and balanced.? Fox did say that they will make available a similar block of 30 minutes for Sen. McCain, if he chooses (or can afford it).

The latest on Palin in Alaska and elsewhere
By Don Frederick

Don Frederick of the Top of the Ticket reports that the L.A. Times/Bloomberg poll released earlier this week raised the prospect that Palin?s effectiveness as McCain?s running mate is a drag or at least a wash on him, 43% thumbs up and 42% thumbs down. The majority polled (50% ) said that her presence on the ticket would not affect their vote. Meanwhile, in Alaska according to Sean Cockerman of the Anchorage Daily News she ?has morphed on the national campaign trail from bipartisan small state governor to conservative lightning rod.? Cockerman goes on to say that her political career will never be the same and will face former Democratic allies furious with her for her campaign attacks. She will also face the ire of lawmakers of both parties who don?t like her recent false assertions that the Troopergate investigation cleared her. Some of this might come back to haunt her in her re-election campaign in 2010.

Goldwater Jr. also not for McCain
Political Intelligence
Boston Globe
By Sasha Issenberg

First it was Christopher Buckley, the son of the leading intellectual era conservative movement, William F. Buckley, Jr., who announced his vote for Obama and who was forced to quit his post at the ?National Review,? the magazine his father founded. Yesterday, Sasha Issenberg of Political Intelligence reported that Barry Goldwater, Jr., a former republican congressman from California and the son of the 1964 GOP presidential nominee, Barry Goldwater, isn?t supporting the republican candidate. He is on Louisiana ballots as Ron Paul?s running mate for the Taxpayers Party ticket.

Third-Party Debate still to come
The Caucus
The New York Times
By Leslie Wayne

Free and Equal.Org, a group formed to encourage third-party candidacies, is promoting a debate for all six candidates. Notably, neither Senator John McCain nor Senator Barack Obama will be in attendance according to Leslie Wayne of the Caucus. This leaves Ralph Nader, who is on the ballot in 45 states as an independent, Cynthia McKinney from Ga. who is the Green Party candidate and who is on the ballot in 30 states. Also invited is Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party ticket in 35 states and the Libertarian Party candidate Bob Barr. Amy Goodman, the host of ?Democracy Now? a program on Pacifica radio will host the event and C-Span will record it. Goodman has called for opening the current debates to the other candidates saying the ?It will not only make for better television, it will make for better democracy.?

Confusion on Verizon and AT&T cell phone towers outside of McCain ?Cabin?
On Politics
USA Today
By Mark Memmott

John McCain is, as Mark Memmott reports, a senior member of the Senate Commerce Committee which oversees the Federal Communications Commission and telecommunications industry. Several of McCain?s senior campaign and Senate staff have worked as lobbyists for Verizon and AT&T. It is notable then, that this year Verizon Wireless and AT&T erected portable cell phone towers, free of charge, on the McCain ranch outside of Sedona, Arizona. According to Stanley Brand, a former House counsel for Democrats and an ethics attorney said that ?it raises the aura of special consideration for somebody because he is a member of the Senate.? Although Secret Service spokesman told those following this story that they did not need the cell towers to do its work, the McCain campaign said that ?the temporary cell towers are just that--temporary? and that the secret Service requested the towers in order to do their job during the McCain campaign.
