Senator ?Jack Bauer? McCain?
The Caucus
The New York Times
By Kate Phillips
Kate Phillips of The Caucus reported today that in an interview with Marie Claire magazinedone last month but yet to hit the stands, Senator John McCain identifies with the character Kiefer Sutherland plays on ?24." . In the interview McCain says that he has a lot in common with Jack Bauer who ?escapes all the time.? He says he does not believe in torture as Jack does on the series however.
McCain finds Borat, ?very, very coarse,? likes "The Office" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm," and defers to his wife on the domestic front. But like many men he makes his opinion felt in certain areas??including the remote?? At the time of the interview he had not yet chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate, but did acknowledge the importance of the women?s vote in the upcoming election, ?I hope this does not sound in any way inappropriate, they are the majority of the population, and many of them are still undecided. So I have to work hard.?

Christian publisher comes out with Palin biography today
On Politics
USA Today
By Mark Memmott
Mark Memmott notes that the Christian publisher Tyndale House will begin shipping a paperback edition of what they call the ?original, definitive biography? of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin to stores today. Kaylene Johnson?s, April 2008 biography entitled, "Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned the Political Establishment Upside Down," will be accompanied by a discussion guide designed by the publisher at faithandpoliticsdiscussionguide.com
Also friom Memmott: Morere election tchochkas -- this time Palin action figures. Perhaps it?s no surprise that Sarah Palin action figures may show up on store shelves. Herobuilders.com has come out with three Sarah Palin action figure dolls to accompany their Obama and McCain figures, according to On Politics. One is of a plain Sarah, another a ?school girl? Sarah Palin and still another is Sarah Palin as a ?super hero,? all sans rifle. Conspicuously absent is an action figure of Palin?s vice presidential opponent, Democratic Senator Joe Biden.
And even more from Memmott: Obama is favored in over 22 countries surveyed in a BBC World Service poll. Memmott notes that the BBC polled 22,000 people and that by a four to one margin those polled believed that U.S. relations with the world would get better with Obama as president. 16% believe that in a McCain presidency US relations with the world would get worse.
?She scares the hell out of me??
The Trail
The Washington Post
By Keith B. Richburg
Former Democratic mayor of New York City, Edward I Koch who crossed party lines to support Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg (before he became an independent) and who supported President Bush over Senator John Kerry in 2004, among other Republican candidates, said Tuesday that not only would he support Barack Obama for president but he would be actively campaigning for the Democratic ticket.
According to Keith B. Richburg of The Trail, Koch said that ?the country is safer in the hands of Barack Obama.? His reason for his supporting Obama was the addition of Governor Sarah Palin to the McCain ticket. He believes that ?defending the public? includes respect for civil rights, civil liberties and other needs, such as gay rights and abortion rights. Added Mayor Koch of Governor Palin, ?She scares the hell out of me.?
Matters of the Heart
The Caucus
The New York Times
By Ben Werschkul
As noted earlier in this column, the musical group Heart wrote and popularized the song ?Barracuda? and had their attorneys send off a ?cease and desist? letter to the Republican campaign asking that their song not be played as a theme for Sarah Palin because of objections to the Republican ticket?s politics. Either Republican operatives never received the letter or chose to ignore it since the campaign used the song in Lebanon, Ohio today to warm up the audience for Governor Palin. The McCain campaign has said that it bought the rights to use the song.
