By: E&P Staff Transcontinental Inc. has announced a $60 million (Canadian) investment in plant and equipment for its Transmag newspaper printing facility in Montreal, which it acquired in 1985. It expects to complete the modernization next year.

The plant will install an eight-web MAN Roland common-impression-cylinder press with full color capacity and ultraviolet ink curing. In order to accommodate the new press and peripheral equipment, the facility will be expanded from 80,000 to 145,000 square feet.

Transcontinental clients will have the option to include color on every page. In addition, clients will benefit from improvements that allow higher quality printed within tighter timelines.

The investment "is part of our strategy to become North America's leader in newspaper printing outsourcing," Transcontinental President and CEO Fran?ois Olivier said in a statement. In the last five years, Transcontinental has invested approximately $250 million in its Montreal-area printing facilities.

The company's own Transcontinental Media division will also benefit, as Transmag prints about 40 of its community newspapers, the business paper Les Affaires and the free daily Metro Montreal.
