By: E&P Staff Transcontinental Inc., St. Laurent, Quebec, announced yesterday the appointment of Francois Olivier as president of the Information Products Printing Sector, effective November 1.

The promotion puts Olivier on the executive management committee. He will report to Transcontinental president and CEO Luc Desjardins. Olivier replaces Serge Bragdon, who will leave Transcontinental at month's end.

Information Products Printing primarily serves publishers, employs almost 5,000 people in 25 plants and nine service centers in Canada and Mexico, and reported revenues of $714 million (Canadian) in 2004.

Olivier joined the company in 1993 as general manager of a Montreal printing plant. He was next placed in charge of a group of four plants in the Montreal and Toronto areas. Since November 1999 he has been senior vice president of the Newspaper Group in the Information Products Printing Sector, overseeing a coast-to-coast network of 17 printing plants.

Transcontinental credits Olivier, 40, with the project to print La Presse at the new Metropolitan plant, the The Globe and Mail contract to print the paper until 2015, and a contract to print The New York Times for Ontario and Upstate New York starting this fall.

Traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange, Transcontinental is the seventh largest printer in North America, with more than 14,000 employees and 2004 revenues of US$1.7 billion. Canada's second largest publisher of community newspapers and a door-to-door distributor of advertising material, the company also is Canada's fourth largest print media group, producing flyers, books, newspapers, magazines, catalogues, and other products.
