Transcontinental Selects Ferag, Goss Post-Press Equipment for New California Plant

By: E&P Staff Canadian Printer Transcontinental will install Ferag and Goss mailroom equipment in its $200 million Fremont (Calif.) facility currently under construction. NADEV, Transcontinental's North American contract printing unit, has signed a 15-year contract with Hearst Communications to print the San Francisco Chronicle at the new plant beginning in 2009.

Ferag will supervise the installation, which will consist of three UTR press gripper conveyors, five DiscPool buffering systems, five MultiSert inserting drums with RollStream (capacity of 12:1 each), forty JetFeeders, two 30:2 Goss Magnapak inserting systems which will be integrated into the workflow, ten MultiStack stackers and twenty SmartStrap strappers.

"This will be the largest Ferag installation in North America when [it?s] completed in January of 2009," said Joe Colletti, president of WRH Marketing Americas. It is also Ferag?s and Goss? largest joint project since they began partnering in 2005.

According to Colletti, the Fremont plant will include a unique combination of Ferag and Goss equipment that plays to each manufacturer?s strengths. The Ferag inserters will provide the printer with the high speeds and flexibility needed to insert on deadline and still produce regional products, while the Goss equipment can handle the heavy lifting on Sundays, when newspapers typically deal with 30 to 40 inserts.

Despite the fact that the equipment represents two separate operations, the mailroom will only have a single set of control systems, Colletti says, explaining that the integration of the two systems is the ?final challenge? for the Ferag/Goss tag-team post-press solution. ?It?s the last step in integrating our product line [and] we want to make it look like one system from the customer?s point of view.?
