'Trenton Times' Publisher Retiring

By: Richard Bilotti will step down as president and publisher of The Times of Trenton next month after nearly 25 years of service there and more than 50 years in the newspaper industry.

Bilotti's retirement was announced in a story the newspaper published in Sunday editions. He will be succeeded as publisher by Brian Malone, the paper's editor, who also will continue to serve in his current post.

The newspaper won numerous state and national awards for journalism and advertising under the leadership of Bilotti, 65, who became its president and publisher in February 1984. The Times was one of the few papers in the nation to post circulation gains in the six-month period ended Sept. 30. The Times' circulation increased more than 5 percent from a year earlier, the Audit Bureau of Circulations reported last week.

Prior to joining The Times, he had served five years as president, publisher and editor of The Gloucester County Times in Woodbury.

The Harrison native also served as Sunday magazine editor for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and as a reporter both in the Cleveland bureau of The Associated Press and for the now-defunct Newark Evening News in New Jersey. He started his newspaper career at age 14, when he started as a copy boy at The Star-Ledger of Newark.

He also is one of only four New Jersey newspaper publishers to serve twice as the president of the 150-year-old New Jersey Press Association, and currently serves as its chairman.

"The staff of The Times is terrific and is putting out a great newspaper in a great community," Bilotti said. "Everything you'd ever want to cover as a journalist is here: Nobel Prize winners, great local politics, development, crime, health care and floods."
