By: E&P Staff Tribune reported today that publishing revenue for May was up 2% to $330 million compared to the same period last year. Advertising revenue for that division increased 3.6% to $265 million. Excluding Newsday, ad revenue rose 5.6%.
Retail ad revenue was up 3.7% with gains in the hardware/home improvement stores, personal services, and amusements categories. Preprint revenue, which is mostly included in retail, grew 3%. Excluding Newsday, it was up 7%.
National advertising decreased 1.3% due to softness in the auto, financial, technology, and movie categories.
Classified advertising advanced 6.6%. Within the category, real estate jumped 37% while help wanted increased 1%. Auto dropped 13%. Interactive revenue, mainly included in classified, was up 29% to $18 million.
Circulation revenue was down 5% due to selective discounting.
Broadcast and entertainment revenues increased 2.3% to $138 million. Television revenue was up slightly 0.9%. Radio/entertainment revenue grew 7.6% due to a higher number of Cubs home games this year.
