By: E&P Staff Tribune Co. is believed to be interested in acquiring some of Hollinger International's holdings in suburban Chicago, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.
Hollinger publishes a variety of papers in the suburbs and in Northwest Indiana, the largest being the 48,047-circulation Daily Southtown of Tinley Park, a daily that Hollinger purchased in December 1994.
Scandal-plagued Hollinger is currently awaiting initial bids. Its largest property in the U.S. is the Chicago Sun-Times, the main competitor of the Tribune. The company also owns the Daily Telegraph in the U.K., the Jerusalem Post and 10 papers in Canada.
Davenport, Iowa-based Lee Enterprises and Northbrook, Ill.-based Liberty Group Publishing are also believed to be potential bidders, according to the Tribune report. Private equity firms such as Madison Dearborn Partners of Chicago and the Blackstone Group of New York may be in the running as well.
Correction: The Daily Southtown is published seven days a week, not Monday-Friday as this story originally reported.
