Tribune Co. Vet Michael Silver Named Yahoo Newspaper Consortium Exec Director

Silver -- the longtime Tribune Co. veteran who began as a reporter and went on to lead such multimedia initiatives as its initial investment in AOL -- will be the first executive director of the Newspaper Consortium that is working with Yahoo to jump-start the newspaper industry's Internet advertising.

With the appointment by the joint venture of 30 newspaper companies, Silver will report to the Consortium's board of directors and cxecutive committee "and begin developing new opportunities for the Consortium across the digital media landscape, as well as to grow the Consortium's existing relationship with Yahoo across content and advertising," announcement said.

Silver will be the public face of the consortium, which has partnered with Yahoo on recruitment advertising, and is expected to soon launch a new toolset for targeting newspaper Website users.

"Mike is widely respected across the broad media landscape because of his success developing and executing a wide range of innovative digital media initiatives," George Irish, president of Hearst Newspapers and chairman of the Newspaper Consortium board of directors, said in a statement. "Mike's energy and passion for media innovation round out his credentials to make him the perfect fit to lead the Newspaper Consortium."

Silver began his media career as a reporter and editor, working for the Miami Herald, Orlando Sentinel, Dow Jones and WPBT-TV in Miami.

Most recently he was an independent consultant who developed online listings applications for the entertainment products division of Tribune Media Services, which he headed in the 1980s.

In his most recent position with Tribune, Silver was vice president of corporate development, focusing on assisting business units in development and management of wireless and online video projects.
