By: Jay DeFoore Tis the season to hire strategic thinkers.

Tribune Interactive is the latest newspaper company to beef up it's long-term strategic planning, hiring Daniel E. Hess to the newly created position of vice president/strategic marketing.

The New York Times and Washington Post both made similar hires last week.

Hess will be responsible for the development of marketing strategies that drive growth across Tribune Interactive businesses.

"As TI continues its rapid growth, it's critical to have a clear view of the unique dynamics of our markets," Brigid Kenney, Tribune Interactive senior vice president and general manager, said in a statement. "Dan joins our executive team with expertise in identifying online and multi-channel consumer needs that translate to strategic opportunities."

Hess joins TI with more than 15 years of experience in multi-channel marketing and industry analysis. He most recently served as senior vice president at comScore Networks, which he joined as one of the company's earliest employees. In six years at comScore, Hess led the company's corporate marketing team and built up its marketing research and consulting practices.

Prior to joining comScore, Hess held various management roles throughout 10 years at Information Resources, Inc. He consulted with major consumer marketing firms in the analysis and development of marketing and sales strategies, and led product launch efforts for IRI's e-commerce division in 1999.

Hess holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Rochester, and is a member of the board of advisors of the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
