By: Staff reports Scherb To Serve Tribune Co. As Chief Technology Officer
The Tribune Co. on Tuesday replaced Tribune Interactive President Jeff
R. Scherb with David D. Hiller, who served as senior vice
president/development since 1993. Scherb will continue serving as
Tribune senior vice president/chief technology officer.
'Because our pending merger with The Times Mirror Co. will
significantly increase the scale and scope of our company, we will use
[Scherb's] expertise to ensure that our combined company is a leader in
technology,' said Tribune Chairman John W. Madigan in a statement.
Madigan said Scherb would lead the technology integration efforts
related to the merger.
Some current and former Tribune Interactive editorial employees did not
agree with Scherb's direction for the unit since its founding one year
ago. Scherb was criticized for placing too much emphasis on e-commerce,
at the expense of editorial integrity - a charge he denied.
Hiller was chosen to lead Tribune Interactive based on his track record
with business development, including online initiatives, Madigan said.
Hiller was and is heavily involved with Tribune's investments in
BrassRing, Classified Ventures, and CareerPath.
Hillary Schneider, Times Mirror Interactive president and CEO, was
appointed to the newly created position of senior vice
president/general manager of Tribune Interactive. Hiller and Schneider
will lead the new-media group, with Hiller reporting to Dennis J.
FitzSimons, Tribune executive vice president. Schneider will also serve
on Tribune's corporate management committee and strategy and
development committee.
Andrew J. Oleszczuk, Tribune Ventures president, has been named as
Hiller's successor to the development position. Under Oleszczuk's
leadership, Tribune Ventures made investments in 19 companies for a
portfolio valued at nearly $1 billion.
