Tribune Launches Recycler.com in Six Cities

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Tribune Co. launched six free classified Web sites last week, in Dallas, Houston, St. Louis, Seattle, New Orleans, and Indianapolis, according to Classified Intelligence Report.

At Recycler.com, people can place free ads for a variety of things like apartment rentals and cars and trucks or home furnishings for sale. The site looks and feels similar to Craigslist. Recycler also culls listings from CareerBuilder and Craigslist.

The Los Angeles Times was the first paper to launch Recycler, when it purchased the site and corresponding print product in 1998. Matt Nakano, the general manager for Los Angeles Recycler, told Classified Intelligence that Tribune wanted to leverage the existing product and roll it out to other cities. Tribune has TV stations in the six launch cities.

In L.A., Recycler is also a print product that appears as a zoned edition. Ads appear online for a week and then are published the following week in the print version. Business sellers can buy a basic ad for $8 for a two week run. There are no plans at the moment to launch a print edition in the new markets.
