Tribune Reports Dip in Revenue, Small Gain in Advertising

By: Tribune Co., one of the nation's largest newspaper publishers, on Friday said January sales slid 1.1 percent as lower publishing revenue offset a small increase in advertising.

The publisher of newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times said total revenue for the period ended Jan. 29 fell to $471.8 million from $476.9 million a year earlier.

Monthly publishing revenue fell 1 percent to $367.2 million from $371 million last year, while ad revenue edged up 0.2 percent to $289 million from $288.4 million.

Ad revenue was helped by a 1.4 percent increase in retail advertising revenue. National ad revenue dropped 6.4 percent on lower movie advertising _ almost entirely at the Los Angeles Times _ that was offset partially by higher results for autos and wireless services. Classified ad revenue climbed 4.1 percent from help wanted and real estate gains.

The company said circulation revenue fell 4.3 percent on lower volume at most of its newspapers and some higher discounting.
