CHICAGO - Tribune Co.'s ambitions of delivering a national audience with its new Times Mirror Co. newspapers face their first screen test next Sunday as it expands the Los Angeles Times film-preview tab "Sneaks" into Chicago and suburban New York City.

With its publication in the L.A. Times, the Chicago Tribune, and Newsday, "Sneaks" will have a combined circulation of 2.4 million. The very next Thursday, Nov. 16, Tribune goes national again with a special section concentrating on retailing through the Internet that will run in those three dailies, plus The Sun in Baltimore; the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale; and the Daily Press in Hampton, Va.

"The only way we can grow revenue over the long haul is to deliver an audience that is bigger than it was a year or two ago," Dave Murphy, president of the newly created national sales unit, Tribune Media Net, said at the recent Newspaper Services of America client conference in Oak Brook, Ill.

Murphy said he had high hopes for "Sneaks," which the L.A. Times publishes quarterly. "We are giving an opportunity for film industry advertisers to reach Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles as they launch what may be the most critical season of the year for them - as they come off a very disappointing summer season," Murphy said.
