By: Staff Reports Acquisition Creates Third Largest Newspaper Company
Times Mirror Co. shareholders approved Monday the company's $8 billion
acquisition by Tribune Co. Earlier in the day, Tribune shareholders did
the same.
The transaction is the largest newspaper merger in history, and creates
the third largest newspaper company in the U.S., behind only Knight
Ridder and Gannett Co. Inc.
The new company is to remain the Tribune Co., based in Chicago and
headed by Tribune CEO John Madigan. The new company would include 13
dailies with a combined circulation of over 3.6 million, 22 TV stations,
top Web sites, and four radio stations.
Based in Los Angeles, Times Mirror publishes the Los Angeles
Times, The (Baltimore) Sun, and other papers.
