By: E&P Staff On the eve of the third anniversary of the hit-and-run killing of eight-year-old Luis Mesa, Tribune Co. increased to $30,000 the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the driver.

Luis Mesa was the son of Maria Mesa, an employee in the accounting department of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in Ft. Lauderdale, and had previously worked at the company's flagship Chicago Tribune.

The boy and his family were ending a week-long visit to relatives in Chicago on Aug. 15, 2003 when he was struck by a dark-colored four-door Chevrolet in the 6200 block of W. Grand Avenue in the city. According to press reports at the time he was thrown 30 yards in the crash. The driver fled, and eluded a pursuing vehicle by repeatedly running red lights.

This is the fourth time Tribune Co. has increased the reward for information about the hit-and-run. The company most recently increased the reward to $25,000 in March.

"Tribune continues to ask the community for help in bringing the hit-and-run driver to justice," Luis Lewin, Tribune senior vice president, said in a statement. "Hopefully, someone out there with information about this crime will come forward."
