Tribune's 'Hoy' Goes Hollywood on Monday

Posted
By: Mark Fitzgerald Hoy, the Tribune Co.'s national Spanish-language daily, launches in Los Angeles next Monday (March 1) with four zoned editions.

Tribune said the L.A. version of Hoy will emphasize local news and advertising in four zones: Los Angeles, Orange County/Long Beach, San Gabriel/Inland Empire and San Fernando.

"We've gathered a talented and tenured editorial team that has extensive experience in writing for Hispanics in the Los Angeles area," Hoy General Manager Juan Arango said in a statement. "Our editorial team is very much in-tune with the realities of the community and will bring credible, quality journalism through the pages of Hoy."

With the launch of the Los Angeles editions, Hoy -- a five-day tabloid priced at 25-cents -- will be competing head-to-head with La Opini?n, a seven-day broadsheet with a 25-cent Monday-Saturday cover price (75 cents on Sunday). Until earlier this year, Tribune owned half of La Opini?n's publishing company.

"The Los Angeles area represents the largest Hispanic market in the U.S. and has been calling for a fresh and different voice in daily news," Louis Sito, publisher of Hoy and Tribune Publishing vice president/Hispanic media, said in a statement. "With a proven record in New York and Chicago, we're confident that Hoy will be well-received by Hispanic readers and advertisers in the Los Angeles area also."

Correction: The original version of this story misstated La Opini?n's cover price.
