By: E&P Staff Tribune Co.'s total consolidated revenues for October declined 3.5% to $439 million compared to the same period a year ago, the company announced today.
Newspaper revenue was essentially flat at $330 million. Advertising revenue for the segment grew 1.4% to $265 million.
Retail advertising dropped 2% on declines in the food and drug store, electronics, department stores, and furniture categories. Preprint revenue, which is included in retail, was down 2%.
National advertising advanced 2.2% on gains from the movie, financial, and media categories.
Classified ad revenue grew 4.7%. Within classifieds, help wanted was up 10% and real estate grew 19%. Auto fell 13%.
Interactive revenue was up 50% to $16 million due to strength in all classified categories.
Circulation revenue slipped 4.5% due to volume declines at most of the company's newspapers as well as selectively higher discounting.
Broadcasting and entertainment revenue dropped 13.2% to $109 million.
