In today's letters, an editor from New Jersey says a recent E&P story about the Israeli air strike on Qana was not really about the press, and readers weigh in on columnist Ann Coulter.***
E&P Story About Qana Wasn't About Journalism, Only Israeli MisdeedsIn what sense was your story about the Israeli air strike at Qana (
"Press Photos Capture Horror of Deadly Air Strike") an article about the press? By my count, only 183 words of a 1,400 word article referred to the photographs taken at the village; the remainder was a straight-forward dispatch from the A.P. that said nothing about the media. The discussion of the photographs was itself cursory, reporting only that news photographers were there, and that some newspapers had posted the photos as on-line galleries. (Stop the presses!) Anyone seeking reportage on the challenges facing news photographers in the region or the impact of graphic photographs on public opinion would have had to look elsewhere (for instance, to NPR, which interviewed at length NY Times photographer Tyler Hicks on those very subjects).
Rather than assume that E&P editor Greg Mitchell, frustrated that more newspapers don't agree with him on Israel, has begun turning E&P's news pages into a primary resource on Israeli misdeeds, I'll look forward to fuller coverage of the role of photojournalism in the current Middle East crisis.

Readers Weigh in on CoulterAnn Coulter has some interesting "theories" (
Coulter: Press Either 'Incompetent' or Full of 'Left-Wing Bias', July 31), especially: "My thinking is that only trauma produces intellectual breakthroughs."
If this was true, then years of exposure to her should have made us all #!@% geniuses by now.
J. P. TrostleI thank God for Ann Coulter and her sharp intellect and quick wit with which she destroys the nit-wittery of the Left.
Most journalists flatter themselves that they are cosmopolitan and better educated than the hicks who are conservative. Just as they are so wrong about economics, politics, science (yes, that includes global warming) and religion, they are wrong about their own giftedness. Most are just parroting the anti-American, anti-capitalist slogans they learned from their professors and expecting that come the revolution they will be part of the ruling elite. Ha!
