By: E&P Staff Tom K. Ryan will end his "Tumbleweeds" comic Dec. 30 after 42 years.

The "cowboy comedy strip," which also includes Native-American characters, is distributed by King Features Syndicate.

The news about "Tumbleweeds" ending was reported on Alan Gardner's Daily Cartoonist blog.

One poster to the blog said: "I have to applaud Tom Ryan's decision.... I'm glad 'Tumbleweeds' is one long-running strip that won't be passed off to another cartoonist.... Besides, Tom's character designs are so stylized and interesting I don't think anyone else could do them justice -- maybe with the exception of Jim Davis, who worked as an assistant on 'Tumbleweeds.'"

Davis went on to create "Garfield," which is distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.

What can a self-driving car teach news publishers about AI? Quite a lot, according to Guy Tasaka. How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
