By: E&P Staff "Peanuts" creator Charles M. Schulz will be spotlighted on "American Masters" tonight, and the late cartoonist's family has mixed feelings about it.
That's because the consultant to the PBS documentary is David Michaelis, whose "Schulz and Peanuts" biography (HarperCollins, Oct. 16) has been criticized by several Schulz family members who say the book is too negative. But a number of book reviewers have praised the biography for its research and writing.
Tonight's 90-minute special features film footage (including home movies), excerpts from "Peanuts" TV specials, original animations, and photos. There are also interviews with people such as Schulz family members, Michaelis, real-life inspirations for "Peanuts" characters, Jules Feiffer, and "For Better or For Worse" cartoonist Lynn Johnston of Universal Press Syndicate.
Tomorrow night, ABC-TV will air the classic "Peanuts" special "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown."
"Peanuts" reruns by Schulz (1922-2000) continue to be syndicated by United Media.
