Two Comic Strips See the Iraq War as Being Lost

Posted
By: E&P Staff Two comics published yesterday coincidentally made allusions to the Iraq War being lost by the U.S.

The reference to the Iraq disaster wasn't totally unexpected in "Doonesbury," but was a bit of a surprise in the only occasionally political "Funky Winkerbean."

In "Doonesbury," B.D. is asked if he thinks the war is lost. "Yeah, it's lost," replies the character, who lost a leg in Iraq.

In "Funky Winkerbean," the cancer-stricken Lisa is shown asking Congress not to reduce funding the research that might eradicate the disease. "We can't give up the fight now," she says, "especially when this is a war we can actually win."

The complete strips can be seen here and here.

"Doonesbury" is by Garry Trudeau of Universal Press Syndicate, while "Funky Winkerbean" is by Tom Batiuk of King Features Syndicate. His Lisa character is expected to die this fall in the comic.
