By: E&P Staff The former publisher and the business manager of the Olney (Ill.) Daily Mail are due in court Jan. 6 on charges that they stole more than $100,000 from the paper over a five-year period.

Former Publisher Carol Garrison and former Business Manager Cindy Brown were arrested earlier this month, and each charged with two counts of felony theft from the 4,330-circulation Liberty Group Publishing newspaper.

Authorities have not said exactly how much each is alleged to have stolen or how the thefts were carried out. In a court filing first reported by Daily Mail reporter Kevin Ryden, Garrison was alleged to have carried out the thefts between October 1999 and July 2004. Brown allegedly began the thefts in December of 1999, continuing until July. They face four to 15 years in prison, plus maximum fines of $25,000 plus restitution. They were released on bonds of $100,000 soon after their Dec. 1 arrest.

According to the newspaper's account, Brown had worked for the paper for 16 years and was named publisher in September 1999, a month before the alleged start of the thefts. Brown began work at the paper in 1990. Both were fired in August, the paper said, after an investigation begun the month before.
