Fallon and Ogilvy & Mather, two New York-based ad agencies, shared the $100,000 Grand Prize at the Newspaper Association of America's 2000 ATHENA Awards, which honor creativity in newspaper advertising. The prizes were handed out last night in New York.
"This year's winners were absolutely outstanding," said NAA Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer John E. Kimball. "So good, in fact, that the judges were unable to pick a single winner."
The top prize winners were among 37 print advertisements that won in the yearly event, which spanned 20 categories and honored agencies from Oregon to Virginia.
In the grand-prize category, Fallon earned its half of the top prize with a tribute to tennis champion Andre Agassi in a promotion from the United States Tennis Association. The ad was a friendly jibe at Agassi doubters, with a tournament-style bracket in which Agassi opponents offer one-liners from his career, such as "Can't win the big ones" or "Doesn't train hard." But Agassi works through the brackets to emerge victorious in the ad that ran shortly after his 1999 French Open victory.
The other grand-prize winner, Ogilvy & Mather, won with a 32-page newspaper insert for IBM's e-business service. Each page featured sharp photos with different "e" headlines, such as "e-jazz" and "e-hope" to apply the approach to different daily occurrences.
