Two weekly publications that have covered their communities weekly for 17 years -- the
Arcata Eye and the
McKinleyville Press -- announced plans on Tuesday to cease publication after their final respective editions on Sept. 25 before merging to form a new newspaper that aims to cover both communities.
The
Mad River Union, co-published by newspaper veterans Jack Durham of the Press and the Eye's Kevin L. Hoover, will put out its first edition on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Both journalists worked for the new paper's spiritual predecessor, the
Arcata Union, which closed in 1995 after 109 years covering both Arcata and McKinleyville, according to a Mad River Newspaper Guild press release.
