By: E&P Staff Getty Images today awarded its first two "2008 Grants for Editorial Photography."
Ian Martin and Lorena Ros -- selected from 139 applicants who live in 29 countries -- will each receive $20,000 and support from Getty Images photo editors to pursue their proposed projects.
The Oakland, Calif.-based Martin will look at the little-known problem of white poverty in post-apartheid South Africa, while Ros will document "the impact and prevalence of childhood sexual abuse in America -- demonstrating the diversity of the survivors' experiences and their common threads." Ros is from Barcelona, Spain, but currently lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Three additional $20,000 grants will be awarded in September.
Getty Images' clients include newspapers.
