Under McClatchy, 'Miami Herald' Will Make Web Site More Local

By: E&P Staff As the Miami Herald passes from the control of Knight Ridder to McClatchy, the newspaper's website is planning a major revamp, with more of an emphasis on local news, the paper said in an article Monday.

Under Knight Ridder, all of the newspaper Web sites owned by the company were created using the same template, under the theory that it would make it easier to sell national advertising on the sites. The uniformity, however, took away from the sites' flexibility and did not allow them to emphasize local character, said the article.

"McClatchy's approach is to emphasize local control over websites so there is a more customized look and feel," Miami Herald Publisher Jesus Diaz Jr. was quoted as saying "We're going to their online platform."

John Morton, who heads the newspaper consultancy Morton Research, was quoted as saying that the local website strategy reflects McClatchy's overall philosophy. "They don't manage their properties from the sidewalk up, and they don't want to."
