Union, Management Set Tuesday Meeting on 'Newsday' Financial Status

By: E&P Staff Teamster leaders will meet with Newsday management Tuesday afternoon "to examine the paper's financial status" in preparation for bargaining negotiations, the union said.

Tuesday's meeting will be the second since Local 406 of the Graphic Communications Conference of the Teamsters (GCC-IBT0) on Jan. 23 rejected by a 473-10 vote a proposal to cut wages 10% to 15%, depending on the job, reduce paid vacation time and lengthen the workweek.

Leading the talks will be George Tedeschi, the president of the national Graphic Communications Conference.

"A union accountant is ready to examine Newsday's financial statements when the paper agrees to release them," the union statement said. Local 406 represents 550 journalists, press operators, plate makers, electronic pre-press workers, truck drivers and building and maintenance workers at Newsday.
