By: E&P Staff There's a new twist in the ongoing labor dispute at The Blade in Toledo. Another local paper reported on Friday that The Toledo Council of Newspaper Unions would be interested in purchasing The Blade from Block Communications Inc. if the company offered to sell.
Several unions have been locked out at the newspaper in recent weeks as a long contract dispute drags on.
Ron Garcia, TCNU president, said, in the Toledo Free Press Web article, the unions would be ?tickled? if offered the chance to purchase The Blade. "Garcia said the National Communication Workers Association and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur offered to help the unions secure investors and
financing for the purchase should a deal become available," the Free Press related.
In the same article, Larry Vellequette, TCNU spokesman, said the unions had previously inquired about buying the newspaper from BCI, but were rebuffed. ?The financing isn't going to be a problem,? Vellequette said. ?It's whether they want to sell."
Blade spokeswoman Luann Sharp said in the article she was unaware the unions had approached the company about purchasing the paper.
