By: E&P Staff United Media editorial cartoonist Matt Bors has become a contributing cartoonist for Free Inquiry magazine.

He'll draw cartoons for each issue of the bimonthly journal of secular humanist news and opinion.

The October/November issue -- which is on newsstands -- features four cartoons by Bors dealing with topics such as Barack Obama's religiosity and why God allows suffering. Bors also illustrated the cover.

"Religious issues are some of my favorite to tackle," says the Oregon-based cartoonist. "I'm proud to be joining a magazine that looks at society's most cherished beliefs with a skeptical eye."

In addition to his United cartoons, Bors draws the biweekly "Civil Discourse" strip for the American Civil Liberties Union and contributes local cartoons to The Oregonian of Portland.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
