By: E&P Staff Georgie Anne Geyer, the opinion columnist syndicated by Universal Press Syndicate, has filed a medical malpractice suit against two dentists she says failed to diagnose her cancer, leading to extensive surgery that has left it painful for her to speak.
The lawsuit, first reported by the Daily Herald in suburban Chicago, asserts she saw Chicago dentist Jeffrey Taugner in August 2006, complaining of a painful lesion on the side of her tongue. Geyer was referred to Daniel I. Chin Jr., a dentist with practices inside the city and in the suburb of Hoffman Estates, Ill., according to the suit.
Chin performed a biopsy of her cheek, the suit states, and a pathology lab subsequently reported she had a common skin disease. But the suit says the symptoms worsened and in the fall of fall 2007, she underwent a biopsy on her tongue that identified stage T3 squamous cell carcinoma that had spread to her lymph nodes.
As a result, her lawyer told the Daily Herald, Geyer has had to undergo extensive surgery to remove the cancer.
Geyer, 74, is seeking unspecified monetary damages in excess of $50,000 from each defendant. The Daily Herald said Chin declined to comment, saying he hadn't yet seen the lawsuit, and Taugner did not return messages seeking comment.
