Universal Issues Advisory About "Tank" Strip Critical of Terrell Owens

Posted Wednesday, September 27, 2006 12:00 am

By: E&P Staff Universal Press Syndicate today sent an editor's advisory to "Tank McNamara" clients because this Sunday's strip features a story line about Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens.

There have been press reports saying Owens might have tried to kill himself yesterday by overdosing on pain medication.

The Oct. 1 comic -- sent to newspapers in late August -- features Owens as a bobblehead doll and pokes fun at the controversial player for his training camp and off-field activities.

"In light of recent events, this may appear to readers as insensitive," said John Glynn, who edits "Tank" at Universal.

"Tank," a sports-related comic drawn by Bill Hinds and written by Jeff Millar, appears in about 120 newspapers.

How Dublin Inquirer uses legal risk assessments to keep accountability journalism moving

When Dublin Inquirer publishes a sensitive accountability story, the challenge isn’t just reporting the facts. It’s deciding whether a small, seven-person newsroom can afford the legal risks that sometimes come with telling the public what it needs to know. For editor and co-founder Sam Tranum and deputy editor Lois Kapila, those decisions once came down to late-night conversations and educated guesswork. Today, the independent Dublin newsroom relies on Reporters Shield’s Legal Risk Assessment service to help identify potential legal vulnerabilities before publication—allowing journalists to move forward with greater confidence while keeping important stories alive.
