A year after leaving the Los Angeles Times as executive editor, John Arthur will become interim editor of The Bakersfield Californian later this month, according to a memo to staff by Californian Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President Logan Molen.
Arthur, who will take over for the departing Mike Jenner, will remain at the Californian "for at least three months" while a permanent replacement, is sought, according to the memo, which adds that Arthur may be asked to stay on in the job.
Jenner, who gave three months' notice earlier this year, will work through June 30.
Arthur rose through the newsroom-management ranks over the course of 23 years at the Times, where he directed coverage of the Northridge earthquake and a North Hollywood bank shootout that won Pulitzer Prizes for breaking news. The memo notes that Californian managers knew Arthur from the Times and from the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
Almost a year ago the Times' reader representative posted on his blog a notice from Editor Russ Stanton of Arthur's departure, saying that he and Arthur "did not agree on the need for the just-announced masthead changes, and we differ on the best approach to reaching our goals."
