By: E&P Staff Two Denver families are calling new houses home thanks to a local contest that declared both of them winners.
Veronica and Carlos Bacas had been on a roller coaster ride over the past few weeks: first they won the house in a Centex/Denver Newspaper Agency contest and then lost it to another woman, then got it back after Centex decided to give both women a house.
In a statement released Thursday, Centex officials said the outcome of the contest was unexpected, but that the company "would rather have two happy winners."
Veronica Baca was one of three finalists in the contest who stood at midfield before a Broncos game on Oct. 21 and turned a key in one of three doors. Her door opened signifying she'd won a home worth more than $200,000.
Before they could close on the house, the Bacas learned another finalist's key also had opened her door. No one from Centex or the DNA was aware the other woman's door had opened until a day or two later.
