Union employees who have been locked out of Journal de Montreal for nearly two years overwhelmingly rejected a tentative contract agreement Tuesday afternoon.

The French-language Website Branchez-Vous Matin reported the proposal was rejected by an 89.3% vote. The 253 employees represented by the Union of Information Workers have been locked out of the tabloid by its Quebecor Media owners since January 2009.

Details of the contract were not officially disclosed, but the Quebec daily La Presse reported management was proposing to keep approximately 50 of the 253 employees, including 17 of the 65 journalists.

The contract proposal was struck after five weeks of negotiations overseen by a provincial mediator.
