By: E&P Staff It?s true that Tribune Co. is talking about outsourcing its national and international news coverage to The Washington Post Co. -- but big sticking points remain and the two are not close to a deal, Chicago Tribune media reporter Phil Rosenthal reported in his blog Thursday afternoon.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the talks Thursday in an article by Russel Adams and Shira Ovide that noted no deal had been reached after a month of negotiations.
Rosenthal?s report fleshes out the disagreements so far. ?The Post wants to sell Tribune Co. outlets its coverage,? he wrote. ?Tribune Co. would prefer a partnership, and is said to be weighing other options, with other partners, that also might yield cost benefits.
Quoting ?sources familiar with the matter,? Rosenthal said it was not clear whether the discussions involved only Tribune?s newspapers or its television and radio news operations.
The Journal report noted that the talks could result in the closing of the dozens of news bureaus in the U.S. and abroad maintained by the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other Tribune dailies.
Chicago Tribune Editor Gerould Kern referred a call to a Tribune Co. spokesman, who said the company had no comment on the report.
Tribune for decades has collaborated with the Post Co. in the syndicated Los Angeles times-Washington Post News Service.
The Journal, quoting unnamed "people familiar with the matter," said the talks could result in a "looser collaboration on news" than a formal outsourcing of all national and foreign coverage.
