Upstate N.Y. Cartoon Museum Is Run By a Cartoonist

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Ticonderoga Cartoon Museum in upstate New York recently marked its fourth anniversary.

Actually, the museum is now a decade old. Stan Burdick -- who has been collecting cartoon memorabilia for more than 50 years -- opened the Hague Cartoon Museum in Hague, N.Y., in 1998. After the building it was housed in was slated for demolition, Burdick moved his collection to the basement of the Ticonderoga Community Building in 2004.

The museum includes more than 1,000 pieces of cartoon art. The oldest image is an 1830 political cartoon about the Duke of Wellington, according to an article in the Press-Republican of Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Burdick -- a retiree who is director of the museum -- has done editorial cartoons himself for an Ohio daily, the Press-Republican, and other New York papers. He also does magazine gag cartoons.
