U.S. Journos Follow Slain Politkovskaya as Milena Jesenska Fellows

By: E&P Staff The Institute for Human Sciences at Boston University has announced that three American journalists will receive the 2006-2007 Milena Jesenska Fellowships for research in Europe.

Named after a Czech journalist who died in a concentration camp for her resistance to Nazism, the awards give $12,500 stipends journalists to spend up to three months working in Europe while establishing working contacts with their European contemporaries. Recently slain Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya was a Jesenska Fellow in 2001.

This year's winners are: photojournalist Julie Denesha, whose project will address the centuries-old issue of the Roma people being accepted and justly treated as the European Union moves its boundaries further to the East; freelance writer Meline Toumani, who plans to write about the influence of EU membership negotiations on the Turkish legal system; and Slate contributor Alexandra Starr, who will to write a series of articles for the online magazine on how immigration is being understood and handled in Austria, Ireland, and Spain.
