By: E&P Staff The Daily News in Batavia, N.Y., reports that it will no longer print USA Today after June 30, 2010.
The Gannett Co. notified the Johnson Newspaper Corp. business that it will not renew its contract, but will instead print copies at its own Rochester Democrat and Chronicle for distribution in Western and Central New York, southern Ontario and northwest Pennsylvania.
"USA Today management told us that the decision not to renew their contract with us was strictly due to economic reasons," Batavia Newspapers Corp. publisher Tom Turnbull said. "They feel they can achieve significant savings by keeping the business in-house."
Adding that quality "was not an issue," Turnbull said Gannett "acknowledged that we have done an outstanding job over the past 24 years." During that time, Batavia Newspapers was recognized as the top USA Today print site for overall quality five times, including as recently as 2007. Last year it finished second out of 33 print sites.
