By: E&P Staff USA TODAY's investigation into causes of air pollution near schools was among the winners of the Society of Environmental Journalists' annual reporting awards, announced Wednesday.
The project, titled "The Smokestack Effect," was headed by reporters Blake Morrison and Brad Heath. Award judges stated that the duo "analyzed millions of government records, led a nationwide canvas of independent air monitoring, and investigated polluting industries near schools in an exhaustive and original reporting project that proved the air outside hundreds of schools was rife with toxic chemicals unknown to parents, school officials and health authorities."
For their efforts, Morrison and Heath took SEJ's Kevin Carmody Award for Outstanding Investigative Reporting, Print.
Other newspapers garnering SEJ honors included the Los Angels Times, Austin American-Statesman, Christian Science Monitor, and The State of Columbia, S.C.
