By: Joe Strupp USA Today will open a permanent New Orleans bureau at the end of November, a spokeswoman told E&P Tuesday. The new outlet will be located in an existing circulation office for the paper in St. Rose, La.

The paper has hired Anne Rochell Konigsmark, a freelancer and veteran reporter for the San Jose Mercury News and Atlanta Journal-Constitution, to staff the one-person office. It will open Nov. 28.

"The rebuilding of New Orleans is going to be a compelling story for a long time to come," Editor Ken Paulson said in a statement. "Opening this bureau gives us a base from which to cover the economic, environmental and political developments that will shape the region's future."

USA Today has other bureaus in Atlanta, Baghdad, Brussels, Chicago, Connecticut, Delaware, Denver, Detroit, District of Columbia, Florida, Ft. Worth, Hong Kong, Kansas City, London, Los Angeles, Nashville, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle.

The New Orleans bureau comes two and a half months after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area and drew hundreds of journalists to Southern Louisiana to document the ongoing cleanup and rebuilding efforts.
