By: E&P Staff In 2001, USA Weekend, a syndicated magazine produced by Gannett, ran photographs of six babies born on 9/11. This weekend, the magazine's Sept. 8-10 issue looks again at the same children as they approach their fifth birthdays.
To enable all six children to be on their hometown cover, USA Weekend produced six different covers for the upcoming issue. The six children are from Dallas; New York City; Anaheim, Calif.; Avondale, Ariz.; Lansdowne, Pa.; and Wrightsville, Ga.
Accompanying the photo essay is an article by USA Weekend contributing editor Ken Burns, the historian and documentary filmmaker. He writes that "Sept. 11, 2001, is forever etched in our national consciousness, like Dec. 7, 1941 -- Pearl Harbor. We will be unable to associate that day with anything else but the dark tragedy that overtook us.
"But for some families, that morning's horrors were countered by near inexpressible joy. For on that day, they experienced life's most precious gift: the birth of a child, a glimmer of hope and resurrection while the rest of us were confronting our own obvious mortality."
USA Weekend is distributed in more than 600 newspapers nationwide.
