By: E&P Staff The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio has promoted Debbie Van Tassel to new assistant managing editor for features. Van Tassel was previously the Monday editor for the paper. She will replace Karen Sandstrom who is stepping down as editor to return to writing.
Van Tassel came to the Plain Dealer as business editor in 1999 after being an editor with the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal, and newspapers in Seattle and Philadelphia.
As business editor for the Plain Dealer, she restructured coverage to stress local news and provide a livelier presentation. She did similar work as Monday editor as she redesigned the Monday edition.
?Debbie is a talented and veteran editor,? said the paper's Managing Editor Tom O?Hara in a Plain Dealer article. ?She?s skilled at managing people, developing ideas and editing the copy. As the editor of our revamped Monday paper, Debbie has been a leader in exploring new, reader-friendly ways to tell stories and convey information.?
Van Tassel will oversee a features staff of about 50 people in the daily Arts & Life section, as well as several features sections including Travel, Taste, Sunday Arts, PDQ, Friday magazine, Inside & Out and the Sunday Homes sections.
