By: E&P Staff Nelson Alvarez Narv?ez, a columnist for the newspaper El Siglo de Marcay in central Venezuela, was murdered by an assassin who burst into a birthday party at his mother's house and shot the journalist six times, the Lima-based Institute for Press and Society (IPYS) reported Friday.
The murderer fled from the scene in a car, where another man was waiting.
It's not known if the murder, which occurred on May 19, had anything to do with his journalistic work. Though tensions are high between the Hugo Chavez government and the independent press, the murder of journalists is rare in that country.
The criminal investigations unit in the city of Marcay, in the Aragua state, "does not rule out any hypothesis, including vengeance," IPYS said.
Narv?ez in recent weeks wrote two regular columns, "Ocumareando" and "Paparazzi," that focused on show business and entertainment news, IPYS said.
