By: E&P Staff Steve Pappas has been named editor of The Times Argus of Barre, Vt. The announcement was made on Monday by Vice President/General Manager Catherine Nelson.
Pappas, 41 succeeds Susan Allen, who had served as editor since 2006. She will remain with the Times Argus as its reporter in the state capital of Montpelier.
"This is an exciting time to be the editor of a community newspaper," Pappas said in a statement. "We have never had more talent, tools and innovation to do our jobs so effectively and efficiently." Pappas also announced plans to encourage community participation, including scheduled "neighborhood meetings" between reporters and community members to discuss local issues. In addition, the paper plans to introduce blogs and other online projects in the coming months.
"The Web and the print formats work hand-in-hand," Pappas said in his statement. "The days of a community newspaper just serving readers every morning or afternoon are long gone. News is instantaneous, and we must strive to be that clearinghouse of information, no matter how big or small, for all Vermonters."
A Vermont native, Pappas studied journalism at the University of Maine, and has been a reporter and editor at newspapers across New England. He most recently served as editor of the Times Argus/Rutland Herald Sunday edition.
