By: Veteran journalist Mike Sherman, who held reporting and editing posts at newspapers in Anniston and Montgomery during a long career, has died. He was 64.

Family members said Sherman, who had battled cancer, died at his Montgomery home Tuesday evening.

During a 34-year career in the newspaper business, Sherman served as city editor of The Anniston Star, state editor of the Alabama Journal and associate editorial page editor and business writer for the Montgomery Advertiser.

"Mike was a wonderful editorial writer," said Ken Hare, editorial page editor of the Montgomery Advertiser. "He grasped complicated issues quickly and had a remarkable recall of Alabama history and politics. But his best editorials were those that had a human side, the kind that were designed to help people. That reflected what was most essential about Mike ? he was just a nice guy."

Sherman had worked the last three years in Montgomery as communications director for Summit America.

Suvivors include his wife of 36 years, Anita Sherman, son Merrill Sherman of Brooklyn, N.Y., and daughter Amelia Sherman of Birmingham.

Services will be held at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Montgomery at 11 a.m. Saturday.
