'Village Voice' Revolving Door Spins Again: Ortega Named New Editor

Posted
By: E&P Staff Since December 2005, The Village Voice has seen quite a few people sit in the editor's chair. Tony Ortega, who was named the alternative-weekly's new editor-in-chief Monday, will be the sixth to fill that position in the past fifteen months.

Ortega, who most recently was editor at the Broward-Palm Beach New Times in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has won many awards for his journalism, including the Virg Hill Arizona Journalist of the Year Award, the Los Angeles Press Club Award for best news story, the 2002 Unity Award and the 2005 Association of Alternative Newsweeklies award for best column.

He has also worked as managing editor of The Pitch in Kansas City, and as a reporter at both the New Times Los Angeles and Phoenix New-Times, where he was also associate editor.

Don Forst, who was editor when the Village Voice Media was bought by New Times in 2005, resigned that December. In 2006, the paper's editors included Doug Simmons, Ward Harkavy, and Erik Wemple. David Blum, who took over in September, was fired Friday.
