By: Joe Strupp The student newspaper at Virginia Tech University, which earned national acclaim for its coverage of the tragic April 16 shooting on campus, has won collegiate journalism's highest honor.
The Collegiate Times was honored with the Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker award for journalism excellence at the National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C., according to the Roanoke (Va.) Times.
?The Collegiate Times beat out 14 other college dailies nominated for the award, which has been given out since 1927,? the Roanoke paper reported. ?The paper received national attention for its coverage of the April 16 campus shootings, both for its print product and online updates of breaking news. The New York Times Web site linked to the paper's list of confirmed victims the week of the shootings, and the paper's writers and editors received the attention of several of the hundreds of media outlets that gathered on campus.?
Amie Steele, the newspaper's editor in chief since April 1, said she was surprised to even be nominated for the award -- a first for the 104-year-old paper. "A lot of people put in a lot of hard work," Steele said. "It's just good to see that that's awarded."
In addition to the Pacemaker, the paper also won second place in the ?Best of Show? competition for special sections with its 2007 football preview.
